Standing in the Gap
Prayers & Reflections for the First Month of School
Educators stand in the gap everyday—between fear and hope, chaos and calm, discouragement and faith. Yet before they can pour into the lives of others, they must first be filled themselves.
Standing in the Gap is a month of scripture, true stories from a lifetime in education, and heartfelt prayers written for the people who shape the lives of children. Whether you serve as a teacher, administrator, counselor, coach, support staff member, or faithfully pray for those who do, these daily readings invite you to begin each school day in the presence of God.
Come quietly. Pray honestly. Walk faithfully.
One day at a time.
Standing in the Gap: Prayers & Reflections for the First Month of School
Called to Stand in the Gap
Years ago, while serving as an assistant principal, I taped a simple phrase to my desk:
Stand in the Gap.
Those words became a daily reminder that my first responsibility wasn’t simply solving problems—it was praying for the people God had entrusted to my care.
After nearly four decades in education, I’ve learned that every school needs more than excellent teachers and strong leaders. It needs faithful people willing to stand in the gap in prayer—for students, educators, administrators, staff, and families.
The prayers in this book were born from a lifetime spent in education. They grew out of classrooms and hallways, moments of celebration, seasons of deep challenge, and countless reminders of God’s faithfulness along the way.
Standing in the Gap was written to encourage fellow educators who begin each day carrying great responsibility—and to invite parents, grandparents, pastors, church members, school board members, and other faithful intercessors to join them in prayer.
My hope is that these prayers will encourage weary hearts, strengthen faithful servants, and remind every educator that they are not standing alone.
